Congress announced candidates for by-elections in Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh on Tuesday. Congress declared candidates for five seats going to bypolls in Uttar Pradesh and lone seat in Chhattisgarh.

Lucknow, September 3: Congress announced candidates for by-elections in Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh on Tuesday. Congress declared candidates for five seats going to bypolls in Uttar Pradesh and lone seat in Chhattisgarh. Devti Karma will contest by-election from Chhatisgarh's Dantewada Assembly constituency. The BJP declared Ojasvi Mandavi, the wife of BJP leader Bheema Mandavi who lost his life in a Naxal attack, as its candidate from Dantewada seat. By-Elections to 4 Assembly Seats in Chhattisgarh, Kerala, Tripura and Uttar Pradesh to be Held on September 23.

In Uttar Pradesh, Congress announced candidates for Lucknow Cantt, Gangoh, Manikpur, Pratapgarh and Zaidpur seats. Congress leader PL Punia's son Tanuj Punia has been named as party candidate from Zaidpur constituency. Congress declared Numan Masood from Gangoh, Dilpreet Singh from Lucknow Cantt, Ranjana Pandey from Manikpur and Neeraj Tripathi from Pratapgarh. Of the five seats, four were won by the BJP and one by Apna Dal-Sonelal. BSP Re-Elects Mayawati as President, Decides to Contest Assembly Elections in Haryana, Maharashtra, Jharkhand And Delhi.

The by-election for Dantewada Assembly seat in Chhattisgarh will be held on September 23. The dates for by-elections in Uttar Pradesh hasn't been announced by the Election Commission. Last month, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi indicated that the party should go it "all alone" and not enter into any alliance. "Priyanka Gandhi asked the party leaders to prepare accordingly as the party is planning to go all alone in the bypolls," a party leader had said.

On Monday, the BJP announced its candidates for ensuing bypolls to Assembly seats in four states and two to the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh. According to dates announced by the ECI, the by-polls for two Rajya Sabha seats from Uttar Pradesh will be held on September 23. Polling will be held between 9 am to 4 pm. Counting of votes will begin at 5 pm and results will be declared on the same day.
