In Gorakhpur, Samajwadi Party’s Praveen Kumar Nishad wins Yogi Adityanath’s Gorakhpur seat, defeats BJP’s Upendra Dutt Shukla by 21,916 votes. Pravin Nishad, the candidate supported by the Samajwadi Party in Gorakhpur had spoken of a "bigger alliance" if the Samajwadi Party won.
SP candidate Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel was declared winner from Phulpur Lok Sabha constituency. His victory is expected to cause major embarrassment to the ruling BJP in the state, as bypoll was necessitated following the appointment of incumbent MP Keshav Prasad Maurya as the Deputy CM. Dedicating his victory to the BSP, which extended backchannel support to the SP, the winning candidate said, "I want to specially thank Mayawati ji and dedicate this victory to her. I want to thank the BSP workers as well. The message is clear. We are two parties but have one ideology."
The Samajwadi Party, backed by two-decade-old rival BSP, is likely to wrest the Gorakhpur constituency from the BJP. The seat was last represented by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. New Delhi, Mar 14: The results of mega bypolls held in the politically influential seats of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar will be declared today. In Bihar, one Lok Sabha seat, Araria, and two assembly constituencies - Jehanabad and Bhabhua - went to polls on Sunday, along with two parliamentary seats of Uttar Pradesh - Phulpur and Gorakhpur. In Bihar, the RJD looks to defend two of the three constituencies - Araria LS and Jehanabad assembly seat - where the party lawmakers died due illness last year. The third assembly seat, Bhabhua, was held by the BJP.
Candidates in fray from Bihar
Araria: The Lok Sabha seat witnessed a direct battle between the RJD's Sarfaraz Alam and the BJP's Pradeep Sinha. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Alam's father Mohammad Taslimuddin had won the seat, whereas, Sinha emerged a close-runner up.
Jehanabad: The NDA is represented in this electoral fight by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's JD(U). The party has fielded Abhiram Sharma. The RJD's nominee is deceased MLA Mundrika Singh Yadav's son Sujay Yadav.
Bhabhua: BJP has fielded deceased legislator Anand Bhushan Pandey's wife Rinki Pandey from the seat. The RJD opted out of the electoral race, allowing it's Mahagathbandhan ally Congress to contest from the constituency. The party has nominated Shambhu Patel.
Candidates in fray from UP
In Uttar Pradesh, the seats of Phulpur and Gorakhpur fall vacant after the incumbent lawmakers - Keshav Prasad Maurya and Yogi Adityanath - were appointed as Deputy Chief Minister and Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, respectively.
The BJP has fielded Kaushalendra Singh Patel from Phulpur to take on Congress' Manish Mishra and Samajwadi Party's Nagendra Pratap Singh. From Gorakhpur, the fight is between BJP's Upendra Dutt Shukla and SP's Praveen Nishad. Meanwhile, the Congress candidate from the seat is Sureetha Kareem.
Interestingly, the BSP had extended support to Samajwadi Party ahead of the elections.
