The leaders were given showcause notice before being removed from the party. However, they were given less than 24 hours to respond, following which they were expelled from the Congress on the grounds of indiscipline and defying party rules, reported The Times of India. Priyanka Gandhi Will Make No Difference to BJP's Poll Prospects in Uttar Pradesh, Says Yogi Adityanath.

The disciplinary action is indicative of the fact that Priyanka is eager to revamp the Uttar Pradesh Congress before the 2022 assembly elections. The UP Congress Disciplinary Committee passed the order expelling the senior members of the party. The UP Congress Disciplinary Committee members include Ajay Rai, Shyam Kishor Shukla and  Imran Masood.

The Congress had appointed Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as the AICC General Secretary for Uttar Pradesh (East). Then Congress President Rahul Gandhi made the announcement months before the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. It was hailed as masterstroke by many political observers.

However, the Congress had a dismal showing in the Lok Sabha Elections in Uttar Pradesh. The Congress could win only one seat in the 80 seat state. Sonia Gandhi retained her seat from Congress bastion Rae Bareily. However, Rahul Gandhi lost the family seat of Amethi to BJP's Smriti Irani.
