Aizwal, December 11: The elections in Mizoram were held for its 40-member legislative assembly on November 28 in a single phase. The main contest was between the Congress and Mizo National Front (MNF). The counting of votes has begun today, and the Election Commission will declare the result by the end of the day. Chief Minister Lal Thanawala will be eyeing to serve as the CM of the state or the third consecutive time. In 2013 assembly elections, the ruling party Congress won 34 seats out of 40, while, the MNF managed to bag only five seats. One seat was won by Mizoram People’s Conference (MPC). If we talk about the vote share of 2013 elections, the ruling party received 44.6 percent of votes, while the MNF managed to get only 28.7 percent of votes. 1) Tuivawl (ST): The constituency of Tuivawl is a part of Mizoram's Kolasib district. It is reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST) candidates. The then Congress candidate Hmingdailova Khiangte won the seat in the 2008 Assembly elections. In 2013, R L Pianmawia of the grand old party won the elections from this constituency. He is also contesting 2018 elections on the Congress ticket. Judy Zohmingliani of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Lalchhandama Ralte of the MNF are also in the fray. 2) Chalfilh (ST): The constituency of Chalfilh is a part of Mizoram’s Aizawl district and is reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST) candidates. The Congress is holding the seat from the last two assembly elections. In the 2013 Assembly elections, Ngurdingliana won the seat. L. T. HRANGCHAL is contesting 2018 elections on the Congress ticket. 3) Tawi (ST): The constituency of Tawi is a part of Mizoram’s Aizawl district and is reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST) candidates. The then Congress candidate R.Lalzirliana won 2008 and 2013 election. He is now fielded by the MNF, whereas, the grand old party gave the ticket to Rosiamhgheta. Check here for live results for Tawi.
4) Aizawl North-I (ST)- Again the Congress is ruling this constituency from 2008. In these elections, the Congress fielded C.Lalhlimpuia replacing two-time winner R.Romawia. 5) Aizawl North-II (ST) – This constituency is again reserved for Schedule Tribes (ST). In 2013, Lalthanliana of the MNF won the elections. In 2018 assembly elections, the opposition party of the state gave the ticket to Laltlanzova Khiangte, meanwhile, H. Liansailova contested the elections on the Congress ticket. The BJP who has not won a single seat in the last five assembly elections in the state will be looking to make inroads in Mizoram. Meanwhile, various exit polls predicted the fractured mandate in the state. The ruling Congress is expected to win 8-13 seats this time.
