Agartala, January 18: With the controversy over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 spreading like wildfire, new reports from Tripura have added more fuel to it. According to the state police, the Mobile Task Force (MTF) detected 2,245 illegal immigrants in the state last year.
Confirming the details, a state police official said, as PTI quotes, “We have detected 2,245 illegal immigrants in Tripura last year among them 2,058 are male, and 187 are female. Most of the illegal migrants are from neighbouring Bangladesh.” Citizenship (Amendment) Bill: Mizoram, Meghalaya CMs Meet Rajnath Singh, Demand Scrapping of Proposed Law.
Adding more, the official said the police have set up seven detention camps of MTF in the state, and all the illegal migrants were put in the camps before deportation. He said, “Altogether 2,127 Bangladeshis were deported last year.”
The officer was of the opinion that most of the illegal Bangladeshis enter into Indian territory for treatment, to attend a marriage ceremony or other programmes without passports. He said, “In case any immigrant carries contraband or arms, we register cases against them and move courts for legal actions. Those who are found not involved in any crime are deported.”
Considering the illegal cases, the officer said that these migrants – allegedly involved with ISI of Pakistan – have been lodged in Bishalgarh central jail. Speaking about the achievements, the officers added that MTF arrested 25 Bangladeshi nationals from Agartala Railway station in June. It is to be known that Tripura shares an 856-km long border with Bangladesh.
