Tripura Lok Sabha Elections 2019: Phase 3 Voting Ends for Tripura East Parliamentary Constituency, 78.37% Voter Turnout Recorded

Voting for the third phase of Lok Sabha Elections 2019 concluded in Tripura. The state has two Lok Sabha seats, i.e. Tripura East constituency, and Tripura West constituency.

Voting for the third phase of Lok Sabha Elections 2019 concluded in Tripura. The state has two Lok Sabha seats, i.e. Tripura East constituency, and Tripura West constituency. The Tripura East seat polled in the third phase of Tripura Lok Sabha Elections on April 23, Tuesday. Voting began for the Lok Sabha polls at 7 am today and concluded at 5 pm. A voter turnout of 78.37 per cent was recorded till 6 pm. The Tripura East constituency houses over 30 Assembly segments in the state. Jitendra Choudhury of Communist Party of India – Marxist (CPI-M) is the incumbent MP from the constituency. The past results of Tripura East constituency say that the constituency has been a bastion of CPI-M for decades. In 2014 Lok Sabha Elections, Jitendra Choudhury of CPI-M won the election in Tripura East with a vote margin of an impressive 65%. With 600,000 votes polled in his favour, the victory margin over the second-placed was of nearly 500,000 votes.

Fast forward to 2019, the election in the constituency is a 3-way battle. The sitting MP Jitendra Choudhury of CPI-M will be taking on Pragya Deb Burman of Indian National Congress (INC), and Pratima Bhaumik of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

In the first phase of voting in Tripura, i.e. Tripura West constituency, the voter turnout was highest among all states at 81.8 per cent. In 2014, the voter turnout in Tripura East constituency was recorded at 83.41 per cent. It will be interesting to see if the voters breach any of the two benchmarks.

While announcing the schedule of General Elections 2019 on March 10, the Election Commission of India (ECI) had announced that the upcoming elections will see Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) being used in all the polling stations. Also, the voters will also be able to check their votes with the help of Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT).

Along with Tripura, people in Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Manipur, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Puducherry, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha, and Tamil Nadu are also voting today.

The ECI, last month, had announced that 2019 General Elections will take place in seven phases. The polling in the third phase of Lok Sabha Polls 2019 will take place on April 23, i.e. today.
