Agartala, May 23: The results of Lok Sabha elections 2019 held in Tripura and other states and union territories in seven phases will be declared today. The counting of votes will begin at 8 am. The main electoral contest is between Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Indian National Congress (INC), Communist Party of India(Marxist) [CPI(M)] and Trinamool Congress (TMC). Tripura consists of two Lok Sabha seats - Tripura East and Tripura West. Elections on both seats was slated to be held in first and second phase of polling on April 11 and April 19, but due to security reasons elections on Tripura East Lok Sabha seat was deferred to the third phase of polling on April 23. Both Tripura East and Tripura West constituencies are reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST).
In the first phase of voting in Tripura West constituency, the voter turnout at 81.8 percent was highest among all states. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded Shri Rebati Tripura, while the Indian National Congress has nominated Subal Bhowmick from this seat. In Lok Sabha elections held in 2014, Tripura West seat was won by Sankar Prasad Datta from Communist Party of India(Marxist)[CPI(M)].
In the third phase of polling in Tripura East constituency, the percentage of voters that exercised their franchise was 78.37. The Tripura East Lok Sabha seat is a CPI (M) dominated constituency. Jitendra Choudhury of CPI (M) is the current MP from this seat. He is wresting on this seat against Pragya Deb Burman of Congress and Pratima Bhaumik of BJP.
