Agartala, September 24: Tripura Congress chief Pradyot Deb Barman on Tuesday announced his official resignation from the party. The senior Congress leader was at loggerheads with several member of the party's state unit's top brass after he demanded an Assam-style NRC in Tripura. Barman issued a statement on social media confirming his exit from the party. "Woke up today after a long time feeling relaxed . I start this day without having to listen to criminals and liars. Not having to worry about which colleague will back stab you," he said.

Darman had, earlier this month, raised eyebrows within the party after demanding that the National Register of Citizenship drive should be carried out in the state to identify and deport illegal immigrants.

The exercise, he said, should be aimed at excluding illegal settlers and not the genuine Bengali migrants. The party, however, was quick to distance itself away from his remarks which political analysts attributing it to the dominance of Bengali-origin voters in the state.
