Tripura Assembly Bypolls 2019: Voting Begins For By-Election to Badharghat Constituency, Counting on September 27

The by-poll would be contested between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Mimi Majumder, the opposition Communist Party of India-Marxist-led Left Front nominee Bulti Biswas, Congress aspirant Ratan Chandra Das and SUCI (C) contestant Mridul Kanti Sarkar. The counting of votes and result will be announced on September 27.

New Delhi, September 23: The voting for by-election to Badharghat assembly constituency in Tripura began at 8 am amid tight security. The by-poll would be contested between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Mimi Majumder, the opposition Communist Party of India-Marxist-led Left Front nominee Bulti Biswas, Congress aspirant Ratan Chandra Das and SUCI (C) contestant Mridul Kanti Sarkar. According to reports, around 58,400 voters are eligible to cast their ballots in the polling today. For the polling today, four candidates, including two women, had filed their nomination papers to the Badharghat reserved assembly constituency in western Tripura. This constituency is dominated by voters belonging to the Jaliya Kaibartya, Mahishy-adas, and Kopali communities.  By-Elections to 4 Assembly Seats in Chhattisgarh, Kerala, Tripura and Uttar Pradesh to be Held on September 23.

Along with Badharghat seat in Tripura, polling to three other assembly constituencies in Kerala, Chhattisgarh and Uttar Pradesh will be held on September 23. In August,  the Election Commission of India (ECI) had announced that the seats are Badharghat (SC) in Tripura, Dantewada (ST) in Chhattisgarh, Pala in Kerala and Hamirpur in Uttar Pradesh will go to poll on September 23.

The Badharghat seat in Tripura is reserved for Scheduled Caste candidates. The polling for this seat was necessitated following the death of sitting BJP legislator Dilip Sarkar. A former five-time Congress legislator, Sarkar, who joined the BJP in 2017 along with seven other Congress MLAs, died on April 1 after a prolonged illness.
