Triple Talaq: Tripura CM Biplab Kumar Deb Opens Door to Victims of Instant Divorce

Agartala, July 31: A day after historic legislation, which criminalises instant triple talaq among Muslims, got Parliament's nod, Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb said Muslim women who are victims of the controversial divorce practise can directly meet him for help. In a tweet, Biplab Kumar Deb shared the contact number of his office and urged Muslim women to approach him if they are given triple talaq.
"My Appeal to all Muslim Sisters of #Tripura who have been a victim of the #TripleTalaq so far can directly meet me and can share their problems directly with me. I would like to solve their issues at the highest priority," Deb tweeted. "For any assistance please call at CMO 0381-241 5555," the chief minister added. In another tweet, he called the passing of triple talaq bill "an important step towards women empowerment". The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday managed to get the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019 or triple talaq bill passed through Rajya Sabha despite not having a majority in the upper house of Parliament. The BJP-led NDA has 112 members in the 240-member house. The legislation received 99 votes in its favour, while 84 MPs voted against it. An Opposition motion to send the triple talaq bill to a Select Committee was defeated by 84-100 votes. The proposed law makes declaration of triple talaq a cognizable offence, attracting up to 3 years' imprisonment with a fine. Under the proposed law, a Muslim woman against whom talaq has been declared, is entitled to seek subsistence allowance from her husband for herself and also for her dependent children.
A Muslim woman, against whom triple talaq is uttered, is entitled to seek custody of her minor children. The bill was passed by the Lok Sabha last week. It will become the law after President Ram Nath Kovind signs the bill.
