New Delhi, July 30: Despite former Jammu & Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti's consistent opposition to the law banning triple talaq, lawmakers of her People's Democratic Party abstained from voting on the crucial bill. Their absence bolstered the ruling BJP's numbers edge in the Rajya Sabha.

The two MPs of PDP, along with their 12 counterparts of AIADMK, six of TRS, four of the BSP and two each of the TDP and YSRCP abstained from the voting. Along with them, six lawmakers of BJP ally Janata Dal (United) also walked out of the House. Triple Talaq Bill Passed in Rajya Sabha 99-84; House Defeats Motion to Send Legislation to Select Committee

The absenteeism brought down the House strength to 183. The NDA lawmakers, along with seven of the BJD voted in favour of the law, whereas, the remaining parties of the anti-BJP bloc voted against it.

The Bill sailed through with the Chair recording 99 votes in favour of the law, whereas, only 84 lawmakers voted against it.

Mufti, who expressed disappointment on social media after the Bill was passed, was jabbed by her J&K rival Omar Abdullah. The National Conference chief asked her to explain why her party members failed to participate in the crucial vote.

"Mehbooba Mufti ji, you might want to check how your members voted on this bill before tweeting. I understand they abstained which helped the government with the numbers needed to pass the bill. You can’t help the government and then 'fail to understand need to pass'," he said.
