New Delhi, June 22: A day after the Union Ministry, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, introduced the fresh bill banning triple talaq in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi stated that the bill will be passed in both the houses this time.

Comparing Triple Talaq with child marriage, Sati system and others, Naqvi said, as news agency ANI quotes, "To end wrong traditions and wrong practices, this country first ended child marriage, Sati system and others. So why should this be not done? The bill (Triple Talaq) will be passed in both Houses." He even attacked the opposition Congress of obstructing the path to make laws for women empowerment and women security. Naqvi added, "Congress leaders sometimes insult Armed forces, sometimes they obstruct the path to make laws for women empowerment and women security. Triple Talaq has got nothing to do with religion, it pertains to wrong traditions and wrong practices."

Amid protests from the opposition, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad tabled The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019, while Congress MP Shashi Tharoor and AIMIM lawmaker Asaduddin Owaisi alleged that Muslim men are being targetted through the Triple Talaq Bill.

The Union Minister introduced the Triple Talaq bill following a division of votes, with 186 members supporting and 74 opposing it. Prasad informed that after the Supreme Court verdict banning triple talaq practice, more than 200 cases were reported.
