In Tonk, 47 per cent of the voters belong to the Muslim community. In 2013, a reverse polarisation was witnessed, leading to the victory of BJP leader Ajit Singh. The electoral fight turned intriguing after the BJP - on the last day of filing nominations - announced Yunus Khan as its candidate from the constituency. His entry into the polling fray was expected to create a dent among the seat's Muslim electorate, apart from attracting the votes of core BJP voters from the majoritarian community.
The role of BSP candidate Mo Ali is also being keenly observed, as he is expected to further slice up the Muslim vote bank of the constituency.
The Congress, however, is unfazed with the challenge posed by the BJP and the BSP. Congress spokesperson Ajay Trivedi said there is a wave in favour of Pilot in Tonk, similar to most parts of the state. "Yunus Khan is headed towards a crushing defeat," he said.
Notably, this is the first time Pilot is contesting for a legislative assembly seat. The former Union Minister had made his electoral debut in 2009, contesting successfully from the Ajmer Lok Sabha seat. The constituency, however, was wrested from him in 2014 -- when Rajasthan was gripped under the Narendra Modi wave.
