TMC Writes to EC Against Special Observer For West Bengal Ajay V Nayak, Seeks Cancellation of His Appointment

Kolkata, April 20: The Trinamool Congress on Saturday wrote to Election Commission of India, raising their objection against special observer for West Bengal in Lok Sabha Elections 2019 - Ajay V Nayak. The TMC in their letter stated that the comments made by Nayak on the present condition of the state are not only objectionable, but undesirable. In the letter, the party had raised objections over his comments and sought cancellation of his appointment.

Raising objections to the comments of Nayak, in which he had allegedly said, "The present condition of Bengal is like it used to be in Bihar 10 years ago and that everything is not well with democracy in Bengal." To this comment, TMC said that since observers act as eyes and ears of the ECI, they should be unbiased and ensure transparency during the elections, but refrain from making controversial comments. West Bengal Poll Violence: BJP Candidates' Office, House Ransacked by Alleged 'TMC Goons'. 

Alleging that Nayak's comments are highly misplaced and in a partisan manner, TMC wrote that these statements by special observer might destabilise the conduct of elections in the state in a free and fair manner and could create a fear psychosis among the electorates.

In the letter, the TMC also raised the question on the appointment of Nayak as a special observer, since he is a retired officer, which is a violation of Section 20B of the Representation of People Act, 1951. Along with this, the TMC also accused Nayak of being an RSS allegiance and connections with BJP. Ending the letter, TMC requested to immediately recall and/or cancel Nayak's appointment as Special Observer of the State of West Bengal in teh Lok Sabha Elections 2019.
