Hyderabad, May 23: Results for the Thiruvallur Lok Sabha Constituency in Tamil Nadu has been declared by the Election Commission of India (ECI). Dr K Jayakumar of the Congress party has won the seat. The counting of votes for the Thiruvallur Lok Sabha Constituency began at 8 AM on Thursday, May 23. This is one of the 39 Parliamentary constituencies in Tamil Nadu which went to poll on April 18. This constituency is a newly formed Lok Sabha constituency after the 2008 delimitation.
This constituency had previously existed for three elections from 1951 till 1962. The constituency number of the Thiruvallur constituency is 1 and is reserved for Scheduled Castes (SC). The constituency was formed after merging the assembly segments of Gummidipoondi, Ponneri (SC), Tiruvallur, and Poonamallee (SC), which were earlier part of Sriperumbudur constituency and the newly formed Avadi. In Tamil Nadu, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has fielded Ponnusamy Venugopal from the Thiruvallur while the Congress has given its ticket to Dr. Jeyakumar from this seat.

All parliamentary constituencies in Tamil Nadu (39 seats) will go for polling in the second phase. Out of the 39 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu, the BJP to contest five seats and the AIADMK is contesting on 27 seats. It must be noted that this is the first time the BJP is seeing an official pre-poll alliance with one of the two major Dravidian parties- the AIADMK and Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) in the southern state.
In the 2014, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam(AIADMK) candidate Venugopal.P had won the seat with a thumping majority.
