Dehradun, May 27: The bypoll outcome of Tharali will be considered to be a litmus test of the performance of Trivendra Singh Rawat-led BJP government in the state, which stormed to power with a two-third majority last year. The polls are slated to be held tomorrow, May 28.

The by-elections witnessed an intense round of electioneering, with the BJP state president Ajay Bhatt camping in the constituency over the past seven days. Meanwhile, the Congress had also left no stone unturned as six ministers in the erstwhile Harish Rawat-led government addressed public meetings in the constituency.

Date of voting and results: The elections will be conducted between 8 am to 5 pm on Monday, May 28. The Election Commission has scheduled the counting of votes on Thursday, May 28.

Candidates in fray: The BJP has given the ticket to Munni Devi, the widow of deceased Shah. The Congress has fielded Jeet Ram, a former MLA from the seat. He was defeated in 2017 by Shah to wrest the constituency.

The elections were largely fought on local issues. Interestingly, both the parties withdrew their list of star campaigners after announcing them in advance. The campaign was largely led by Ajay Bhatt and Pritam Singh for the BJP and Congress, respectively.
