Hyderabad, May 23: The results of Lok Sabha elections held in Telangana and other states and union territories in seven phases will be declared today. The counting of votes has begun. The main electoral contest is between theĀ Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress. 17 Lok Sabha seats in Telangana went to polls on April 11 in the first phase of general elections. According to the Election Commission,Ā 62.69 per cent voting was recorded in polls. The TRS, led by Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao or KCR, contested 16 seats, leaving Hyderabad parliamentary constituency for AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi whoĀ is seeking re-election for a fourth consecutive term from Hyderabad. Telangana General Election Results 2019 by Election Commission:
This is the first general election held in Telangana since the formation of the state on June 2, 2014, after bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. In 2014 Lok Sabha polls in undivided Andhra Pradesh, the TRS had won 11 out of 17 seats, the Congress two and the BJP, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and YSR Congress one seat each in Telangana region. This time, TDP did not field candidates. According to opinion polls, the TRS has an upper hand over its political opponents in the state.
Months before Lok Sabha elections, Assembly polls were held in Telangana. The TRS had won 88 seatsĀ in the 119-member House.Ā The TDP had contested polls as part of an alliance with the Congress, CPI and Telangana Jana Samithi (TJS). TDP and Congress secured two and 19 seats respectively, whileĀ the CPI and TJS drew a blank. TRS chief KCR has emerged as the mascot of Telangana pride after he led the massive movement that convulsed undivided Andhra Pradesh and ended with the creation of the youngest state of the country in 2014.
