Bengaluru, March 26: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday picked its Karnataka Yuva Morcha General Secretary Tejasvi Surya as candidate for Bangalore South Lok Sabha constituency. According to reports, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) leader has been chosen to fight against K.Hariprasad of the Congress party. The prestigious constituency is slated to go for poll on April 18. After days of deliberations, the BJP named Surya as the candidate for this constituency who will be seen continuing the legacy of late Ananth Kumar. The Bengaluru South constituency has been the bastion of BJP ever since late Ananth Kumar defeated Congress in 1996. According to reports, the Surya's surprise selection is believed to have dashed hopes of Tejaswini, widow of late Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister H.N. Ananth Kumar. Tejaswini is contesting from the high-profile seat, which her husband had won for a record six times since 1996.

The BJP also named Aswath Narain as its candidate from Bangalore Rural Lok Sabha constituency against sitting Congress member D.K. Suresh, who is re-contesting for the second time.
All the 28 Lok Sabha constituency in Karnataka will be held in two phases on April 18 and 23. The counting of votes will be held on May 23. "Polling will be held in Karnataka in two phases on April 18 for 14 seats and April 23 for another 14 seats. Vote count will be held on May 23.

Of the 28 constituencies, 5 are reserved for the Scheduled Castes (SCs) and two for the Scheduled Tribes (STs). The SC seats are Bijapur, Gulbarga, Chitradurga, Chamarajanagar and Kolar and ST seats are Bellary and Raichur in the state's northern region.
In the 2014 general elections, polling in all the 28 parliamentary seats was held in a single phase on April 17, 2014. Votes were counted on May 16, 2014. The BJP had won 17 seats, the Congress 9 and the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) two.
