Results for the Tehri Garhwal Lok Sabha Constituency in Uttarakhand along with four other constituencies of the hill state has been declared by the Election Commission of India (ECI). Mala Rajyalaxmi Shah of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won the seat. Shah was fielded against Congress candidate Pritam Singh. The counting of votes for the Tehri Garhwal Lok Sabha Constituency began at 8 AM on Thursday, May 23.

At present, the Tehri Garhwal Lok Sabha constituency comprises of fourteen Vidhan Sabha (legislative assembly) segments including Ghansali, Mussoorie, Tehri, Chakrata among others. The seat is not reserved for any category and its constituency number is 1. The Tehri Garhwal constituency came into existence in 1957, following the delimitation of Lok Sabha constituencies. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded its sitting parliamentarian Mala Rajya Laxmi Shah from the Tehri Garhwal parliamentary constituency in Uttarakhand. Meanwhile, the Congress has fielded its state Congress president Pritam Singh from the Tehri Garhwal seat. The Tehri Garhwal Lok Sabha constituency is believed to witness a tough battle between Congress’ Singh who will be up against BJP’s Mala Rajya Laxmi Shah. In the run up for the General Elections 2019, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Opposition Congress have sounded the poll bugle as soon as the election dates were announced. Gopal Mani, Independent candidate, Rajendra Purohit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and BJP’s Mala Rajya Laxmi Shah are the official candidates of this constituency.
In the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections, BJP’s Mala Rajya Laxmi Shah won with a thumping majority defeating Congress’ Saket Bahuguna. Shah had got a total of 446733 votes while Bahuguna managed to garner 254230 votes in the last assembly elections held in 2014.
According to the announcement by Election Commission of India (ECI), Uttarakhand will go for polls in a single phase on April 11 to constitute the 17th Lok Sabha. The counting of votes will be held on May 23. The key dates for issue of gazette notification for phase 1 is 18th March, the last day of nomination is 25th March, the date for scrutiny of nomination is 26th March while the last date of withdrawal is 28th March.
