Tamil Nadu Local Body Elections 2019: DMK Alleges Irregularities in Counting of Votes in Panchayat Polls, Threatens to Go on Hunger Strike
While the counting of votes for Tamil Nadu local body (Panchayat) polls are still underway, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has alleged irregularities in the elections. Party president MK Stalin met state election commissioner in Chennai and said that his party will go on hunger strike if their complaint is not addressed.
Chennai, January 2: While the counting of votes for Tamil Nadu local body (Panchayat) polls are still underway, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has alleged irregularities in the elections. Party president MK Stalin met state election commissioner in Chennai and said that his party will go on hunger strike if their complaint is not addressed. MK Stalin said that in Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami's Salem constituency, results have not been declared even after the counting process was completed. He alleged that AIADMK and district officials are blocking the results as DMK emerged as the winner.
"In Salem, counting is over but they are delaying the result declaration. My party cadre from Salem has told me repeatedly that the election office bearers are biased and not responding to queries raised by my party. I am told that the Chief Minister’s relative is giving directions to the EC on what should be done," DMK chief said after meeting election officer.
As per the poll trends (by the time this news was published), opposition DMK is marginally ahead of AIADMK. As per reports, DMK is leading in more number of Panchayat Union Ward Member, District Panchayat Ward Member than the ruling party. In District Panchayat seats, DMK is ahead on 105, AIADMK on 104 and Others 3.
DMK fought local bodies poll in alliance with Congress, CPM, CPI, KMDK (Kongunadu Makkal Desia Katchi), MDMK (Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) and VCK (Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi). While AIADMK contested in alliance with BJP, PMK (Pattali Makkal Katchi), DMDK (Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam) and TMK (Thyaga Marumalarchi Kazhagam).
