The state went into polling on April 18, 2019, the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections. The counting of the votes will begin at 8 am today on May 23, 2019. The political parties contesting for the elections in the state include AIADMK, DMK, Makkal Neeti Maiam (MNK), BJP, AMMK, PMK and Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK). The state has 38 parliamentary constituencies in the Lok Sabha after Vellore was cancelled due to IT raids in DMK treasurer Durai Murugan’s house. All the 38 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu went to polls on April 18, 2019, in the second phase of the elections. Out of the 1.51 million voters, around six crore cast their votes for the parliamentary constituencies and 18 assembly constituencies.

Around 71.62 percent voters cast their votes during the second phase of the elections in Tamil Nadu. CM K Palaniswamy and DMK chief MK Stalin were among the early voters.

For five decades, politics in Tamil Nadu has been dominated by two of its biggest political parties All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).

The tussle for power in Tamil Nadu is among the AIADMK-led alliance, which has the BJP, PMK and DMDK in the state; DMK-led Secular Democratic Front (SDF), which has Congress, VCK, MDMK and left-aligning parties.

Dinakaran-led AMMK, NTK and Kamal Hassan-led MNK are also key players this time round in Tamil Nadu.

The year 2019 will also be the first time Tamil Nadu will go for polling without two of its most powerful leaders -- J Jayalalitha and Karunanidhi. Previously in 2014, AIADMK under the leadership of Jayalalitha won a landslide victory of 37 out of 39 seats in the state. There has been a lacuna in leadership after the death of both the leaders.

The BJP-led NDA barely managed two seats. Congress and its ally DMK couldn't open accounts in the state in 2014. As per the Tamil Nadu exit polls, most announced a DMK victory in the state. Polls predicted that the Congress alliance may win an average of 25 out of the 38 seats.
