New Delhi, August 7: Late Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sushma Swaraj, who died following a cardiac arrest on Tuesday, will be cremated today. The former foreign affairs minister's funeral is being attended by leaders cutting across party lines. The last rites will be performed in the evening at Lodha Road Crematorium. The mortal remains, which were kept at her residence since early morning, was scheduled to be taken to the BJP headquarters at 12pm. The body would be taken for cremation at around 4pm. Thousands are expected to attend the last rites ceremony.

Swaraj, 67, breathed her last at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi, where she was rushed to after suffering a heart attack. Her death evoked emotional reaction from across the nation, as netizens recalled her stint as the External Affairs Minister when she rescued scores of Indians stranded abroad.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called her demise an unprecedented loss for the nation, adding that Swaraj had spent her entire life to serve the society and help those in need.

"I can’t forget the manner in which Sushma Ji worked tirelessly as EAM in the last 5 years. Even when her health was not good, she would do everything possible to do justice to her work and remain up to date with matters of her Ministry. The spirit and commitment was unparalleled," he said.

"Sushma Ji’s demise is a personal loss. She will be remembered fondly for everything that she’s done for India. My thoughts are with her family, supporters and admirers in this very unfortunate hour. Om Shanti," the PM added.

A similar statement was issued by BJP patriarch LK Advani, who had worked closely with Swaraj during his stint as the party chief.

"The nation has lost a remarkable leader. To me, it is an irreparable loss and I will miss Sushmaji’s presence immensely. May her soul rest in peace. My heartfelt condolences to Swaraj ji, Bansuri & all members of her family. Om Shanti," said the statement issued by Advani.
