Suraj Pal Amu, at Helm of Anti-Padmaavat Protests, Resigns From BJP's Primary Membership
Pal is the national secretary of Karni Sena, which staged nationwide demonstrations against the release of Bollywood film Padmaavat.
New Delhi, Jan 31: Rajput leader and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member Suraj Pal Amu resigned from the primary membership of the party on Wednesday. The move came days after Pal was arrested by Gurugram police for his role in organising the protests against controversial Bollywood film Padmaavat.
Pal, who is also the national secretary of Shri Rajput Karni Sena, was at the helm of the agitation staged by the group against Padmaavat, which depicted 14th century Rajput queen Padmini.
In the wake of violent demonstrations staged by Karni Sena cadres in Gurugram past week, the police arrested Pal and took him under custody. However, he was granted bail after five days.
After his release from jail, sources close to Pal said he was disappointed with the BJP government in the state and Centre, which not only failed in stalling the release of Padmaavat, but also did not took steps to prevent the arrest of the first and second-rung leaders of the Karni Sena.
Pal first drew controversy months ahead of the release of Padmaavat, by announcing a bounty of Rs 10 crore for anyone who beheads the movie's lead actress Deepika Padukone.
