Sukhbir Singh Badal, Several SAD Workers Booked for Thrashing Congress Worker in Muktsar During Punjab Rural Polls

Chandigarh, Sep 20: Former deputy chief minister and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal and few other party workers were booked for allegedly thrashing a Congress worker on Wednesday. The incident took place at Killianwali village in Punjab's Muktsar district during Zila Parishad and Panchayat Samiti polls in the state. The victim identified as Jatinderpal Singh (55) alleged that he was beaten up by a group of Akali workers led by Badal. According to a PTI report, his vehicle was damaged and he received life threats.
Meanwhile, former Punjab deputy chief minister said a false case has been registered against him and his party workers. "Never instigated anyone. All lies and falsehood. Muktsar SSP Manjit Singh Dhesi informed that a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) was registered.
On Wednesday, polling began at 8 am and ended around 4 pm. The polling was done for 22 Zila Parishads (354 members) and 150 Panchayat Samitis (2,900 members). The counting is believed to take place September 22. Reports inform that at least 33 candidates for Zila Parishads and 369 members for Panchayat Samitis had already been declared unopposed. As per State Election Commission’s figures, the highest polling (71.66%) took place in Mansa and the lowest (43.77%) in Tarn Taran.
