Bengaluru, June 13: Sowmya Reddy of the Congress party registered a huge victory in the Jayanagar Assembly Election 2018, winning the Karnataka Vidhana Soudha seat by about 4,000 votes. Reddy defeated BN Prahlad of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on the Jayanagar seat in the Bengaluru district of Karnataka. The counting of votes had begun at 8 am this morning and the final result was out by afternoon after 16 rounds of counting.
Voting for the Jayanagar Seat of Karnataka Assembly was held on Friday, June 11 and a voter turnout of 55 per cent was recorded. Sowmya Reddy is the daughter of former Karnataka home minister Ramalinga Reddy. She is known for being an animal rights activist and environmentalist.
Sowmya Reddy was embroiled in a controversy during the campaign for the Jayanagar Election after images of her eating non-vegetarian food at a Ramzan gathering were circulated over social media. Reddy, who is a vegan, later clarified that the image was photoshopped and also sent the original image to the fake news busting website Alt News.
Sowmya Reddy also made news in 2015 with her eco-friendly wedding with Abhishek Raje. She made sure that all the waste from her wedding was renewable and ensured no plastic was used anywhere during the entire wedding.
It now remains to be seen whether Reddy gets a portfolio in the HD Kumaraswamy Cabinet in Karnataka. reports say Ramalinga Reddy had rejected a portfolio in Karnataka Cabinet as he wanted to concentrate on his daughter's election and may now pitch for a ministerial berth for her.
