UDP Candidate Pius Marwein wins Ranikor Bypoll by 2896 votes, NPP second. NPP had fielded 5-time MLA from Ranikor Martin M Danggo, who had quit the Congress, following which this bypoll was necessitated.

Shillong, Aug 27: Fate of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and other candidates who contested in the by-elections for the assembly seats of South Tura and Ranikor will be determined today. The State Election Commission (SEC) is scheduled to declare the bypoll results today. The counting of votes is scheduled to begin at 8am. In the bypolls held on Thursday, a collective voter turnout of over 77 per cent was recorded. In South Tura, where the electorate size is 30,231 voters, 72.82 per cent of the voters exercised their right to franchise. The voter turnout in Ranikore, with an electoral strength of 29,685 was recorded as 82.1 per cent.

South Tura Assembly By-elections: Candidates in Fray & Reason for Bypoll

- Chief Minister Conrad Sangma is contesting from the ruling National People's Party (NPP). The victory is essential for Sangma to continue as the CM as he is currently not a member of the legislative assembly.

- The Congress candidate is debutant Charlotte W Momin. Independent candidates John Leslee K Sangma, who is a former MLA, and Chris Kabul A Sangma are also in the fray.

- The bypoll was necessitated as the incumbent MLA and Sangma's sister, Agatha Sangma resigned in July to pave way for her brother's election.

Ranikor Assembly By-elections: Candidates in Fray & Reason for Bypoll

- The bypoll was necessitated as the incumbent MLA, Martin M Danggo, resigned and joined the NPP. He was in the fray again, constesting on the NPP ticket.

- The Congress fielded Jackiush Sangma, whereas, the UDP an ally of the NPP, had given the ticket to Pius Marwein.

In the 60-member Meghalaya assembly, the NPP with 19 MLAs leads a coalition government, with support from seven UDP MLAs, four PDF MLAs, two Independents, two MLAs each of the BJP and the HSPDP. The rainbow alliance, as pundits call it, also includes one legislator each from NCP and KHNAM. The Congress, which is the single-largest party with 20 seats, is serving as the prime Opposition.
