New Delhi, June 1: Sonia Gandhi, UPA chairperson, was on Saturday re-elected as the leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) during a meeting in the national capital. The event took place at a meeting of party MPs at the Central Hall of Parliament on Saturday. According to reports, the meeting was attended by the party's 52 newly elected Lok Sabha MPs and Rajya Sabha members.

Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala took to Twitter to Congress Sonia Gandhi. "Smt. Sonia Gandhi elected as the leader of Congress Parliamentary Party! Gandhi, who represents Uttar Pradesh's Rae Bareli in Lok Sabha, is the chairperson of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA). The MPs will also elect the Congress leader in Lok Sabha and chalk out the party's strategy for the upcoming session of Parliament, they said.

The CWC has already rejected his offer to resign and unanimously passed a resolution authorising him to bring structural changes in the party at all levels in a bid to revamp it.

The Congress is falling short of three members which would qualify it for the post of the Leader of the Opposition. According to reports, the Lok Sabha elections which were recently concluded has left the party with 52 lawmakers - marginally higher that the figure of 44 in 2014.
