Sonia Gandhi Dissolves Punjab Congress Committee; Sunil Jakhar Retained As State Unit Chief
Congress interim President Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday dissolved the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. All district committees in the state were also dissolved with immediate effect. However, senior party leader Sunil Jakhar was retained as the state unit chief.
Chandigarh, Janaury 21: Congress interim President Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday dissolved the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. All district committees in the state were also dissolved with immediate effect. However, senior party leader Sunil Jakhar was retained as the state unit chief. The grand old party also set-up an 11-member committee for the state with Asha Kumari, AICC in-charge for Punjab, as its chairperson. In an official communication, the party said, “Honourable Congress President has dissolved the office bearers and executive committee of Pradesh Congres Committee (PCC) and District Congress Committee (DCC) of Punjab, with immediate effect.” It further added, “the president of Punjab PCC shall remain unchanged.” General Secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal, later in a statement said, "The Congress President has constituted the coordination committee of Punjab for better coordination with the party and government."

The development came a day after Amarinder Singh, Jakhar and Kumari met Sonia Gandhi at her residence here for over 45 minutes. The other members of the newly formed committee, include Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, Ambika Soni, Punjab Ministers Charanjit Singh Channi, Sundar Sham Arora, Sukhinder Singh Sarkaria and Vijay Inder Singla. The PCC was dissolved at a time of ongoing internal tussle in the party in Punjab. Recently, a war of word broke out between Congress MP and Captain Singh. The Congress MP opposed the state government's move of hiking power tariff and also demanded the immediate sacking of Punjab Advocate General. However, the Punjab CM rejected Bajwa’s demands and termed them as illogical and irrational.
