Varanasi, May 10: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Smriti Irani on Friday made a scathing attack on Indian National Congress president Rahul Gandhi during a poll campaigning in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi. The BJP candidate from Amethi said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi served the nation and hypocrites but the "corrupt Congress" didn't give him anything except insults. She said that Congress leaders only wear 'Janeu' and visit 'Ganga' once during five years at the time of elections. "PM Narendra Modi served nation and hypocrites, mahamilawati people and corrupt Congress didn't give him anything else except insults. They're people who wear a 'janeu' once in 5 yrs, who go on foreign tours for 5 yrs and come for 'darshan' of Ganga at the time of elections," the 43-year-old leader said. Targeting Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Irani said that "they're (referring to Priyanka Gandhi) people who ask in Amethi if they should contest from Varanasi but when it is time to draw swords in the battlefield they leave not only Varanasi and Amethi but go to Wayanad. She also added that Congress leaders "don't bow their heads before Ram Lalla as they remember their vote bank."
In Varanasi, 26 candidates are contesting polls. The key candidates in the Varanasi constituency for Lok Sabha Elections 2019 are PM Narendra Modi of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Ajay Rai of Indian National Congress, Shalini Yadav of Samajwadi Party and Anil Kumar Chaurasiya of Janhit Kisan Party among others.
Meanwhile, Lok Sabha election polling in Varanasi will take place in the last of the seven-phased parliamentary polls. Varanasi, with has over 18 lakh registered electorates, will vote on May 19. Counting of votes will take place on May 23. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is seeking his second term in the Lok Sabha from Varanasi seat.
