New Delhi, November 5: Union textiles minister Smriti Irani gifted 10,000 sarees to the workers and members of the BJP's women wing in Amethi. The workers have been "touched" by the gesture, said media reports. Smriti Irani had contested from Amethi Lok Sabha seat, considered to be a Gandhi family bastion, contesting against Rahul Gandhi in the year 2014.
Irani has been actively involved in the Amethi constituency despite her loss in the last general elections. She was even given the portfolio of the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cabinet. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also visited Amethi and held a rally for Smriti Irani during the campaigning for the 2014 Lok Sabha Polls.
Irani was later given the charge of the textile ministry and holds the portfolio currently. The Union Textile Minister recently found herself in controversy after her comment on the Supreme Court verdict on the entry of women in the Sabarimala temple. The Union Minister hit back at those trolling her for her remark on sabarimala temple with the picture captioned 'Hum Bolega to Bologe ki Bolta Hai'.
On November 1, it was reported that a complaint was lodged at a Sitamarhi court Thursday against Union minister Smriti Irani for her alleged remarks on allowing women of menstruating age into the Sabarimala temple in Kerala.
