The Sikkim Kranti Morcha (SKM) has trumped the ruling Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) in the assembly elections. In a bail-biting finish, the SKM ended up winning 17 seats, whereas, the SDF ended up with 15.

Gangtok, May 23: Results of Lok Sabha elections 2019 will be declared in Sikkim, along with other states and union territories today. The Election Commission of India (ECI) is scheduled to begin the counting of votes at 8:00 am. In Sikkim, which went to polls in the first phase on April 11, the sole parliamentary seat and 32 assembly constituencies were simultaneously contested. From the Sikkim Lok Sabha seat, the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) has fielded Dek Bahadur Katwal, whereas, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had issued ticket to Laten Tshering Sherpa. The Sikkim Kranti Morcha (SKM) fielded Indra Hang Sabba from the seat, whereas, the Congress did not enter the poll fray in the constituency.

Prem Das Rai from SDF won the Sikkim parliamentary seat in 2014 general elections. He won the constituency by margin of over 41,000 votes against his nearest rival, SKM candidate Tek Nath Dhakal.

In the 32-seat Sikkim legislative assembly, the ruling party is SDF, which has been ruling the state since 1994. The party is primarily being challenged in this elections by a rising BJP, which has tied up with the SKM for the assembly polls. The Congress, which was once the principal Opposition party, had its prospects reduced by the pollsters.

In Exit Poll 2019 overall trend which was announced on 19 May 2019, showed that BJP was winning the elections on 300+ seats, while Congress was leading on 120+ seats.

In 2014 Lok Sabha election, SDF secured a majority by winning 22 out of 32 seats and SKM won the rest ten seats. Pawan Kumar Chamling became the Chief Minister of Sikkim for the fifth time on May 21, 2014.
