Independent Candidate Rajendra Shamgonda Patil (Yadravkar) has won the Shirol Assembly constituency in Maharashtra by defeating the Shiv Sena candidate Ulhas Sambhaji Patil. Shirol is one of the 288 Vidhan Sabha (Legislative Assembly) constituencies of Maharashtra. Geographically, it is one of the 10 assembly constituencies that are located in Kolhapur district. The Election Commission of India, while announcing the Maharashtra Assembly Elections 2019, mentioned that it will be a single-phase election, and hence the electorate in Shirol will be casting their vote on October 21.

The current MLA of Shirol assembly constituency in Maharashtra is Ulhas Patil, who belongs to Shiv Sena. In Maharashtra Assembly Elections 2014, he defeated Nationalist Congress Party’s (NCP) candidate after securing 70,809 votes in his favour. In 2009 Maharashtra Assembly Polls, it was Satgonda Revgonda Patil of Congress who had won the elections from Shirol constituency. As per the election commission website, the schedule of polls in Maharashtra points that nomination papers for the candidature were filed till October 4. Following this, the nomination papers were scrutinised on October 5, and the aspiring candidate withdrew candidature till October 7. The polling took place on October 21 and Election Commission announced results on October 24. The new government in Maharashtra should be formed before November 9 because the current assembly expires on that day.

While announcing the dates of Elections 2019, the EC had directed the poll officials to make sure that all the specially-abled people and senior citizens are given all the services for smooth conduct of polls. Also, the EC had said that at least one polling booth in every assembly constituency would be women-exclusive.

The current term of Maharashtra government is set to end on November 9. There are a total of 288 seats in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. It will be interesting to see which party (or alliance) comes to power as the elections get over.
