Counting of votes for 230 seats of Madhya Pradesh assembly, including Sheopur, Vijaypur, Sabalgarh, Jaura, Sumawali and Morena, has begun.

Bhopal, December 11: The results of assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh will be announced today. Counting of votes for 230 seats of Madhya Pradesh assembly, including Sheopur, Vijaypur, Sabalgarh, Jaura, Sumawali and Morena, will begin at 8 am. Stakes are high for the ruling BJP which also held Sheopur, Sabalgarh, Joura, Sumawali and Morena seats in 2013. Vijaypur seat is with the Congress. In Sheopur, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fielded incumbent MLA Durga Lal Vijay, who will face an electoral challenge from Congress candidate Babulal. In the 2013 Madhya Pradesh assembly elections, Durga Lal Vijay was elected, while BSP's Babu Jandail came a distant second. Congress's Brajraj Singh was in the third position. In Vijaypur, the electoral contest is between Congress's incumbent MLA Ramniwas Rawat and BJP candidate Seetaram Adiwashi.

The BJP replaced its incumbent MLA Meharban Singh Rawat with Sarla Vijendra Rawat to retain Sabalgarh seat. Vijendra Rawat is facing a challenge from Congress's Baijnath Kushwah. In Jaura assembly seat, the main contest is between BJP's sitting legislator Subedar Singh Rajodha and Congress candidate Banavareelal Sharma. The Sumawali seat witnessed a fight BJP's Ajab Singh Kushwaha, who quit BSP ahead of elections, and Congress candidate Adal Singh Kasana.

Sumawali seat was previously won by Satyapal Singh who defeated then BSP candidate Kushwaha with a margin of 14,076 votes. This time, BSP fielded Gandhi Manvendra Singh. In Morena, BJP's sitting MLA Rustom Singh is facing a challenge from BSP's Balvir Singh Dandotiya and Congress candidate Raghuraj Singh Kansana. The BJP contested all 230 seats, while the Congress fielded candidates in 229 seats leaving one seat, Jatara in Tikamgarh district, for Sharad Yadav-led LJD. Mayawati's BSP contested in 227 seats and SP fielded candidates in 51 constituencies.

The BJP had won 166 seats in 2013 Assembly polls, while the Congress and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) had bagged 58 and four seats respectively.
