Shashi Tharoor Faces BJP Ire for Calling Naga Traditional Headgear ‘Outlandish’ and Insulting PM Narendra Modi
Tharoor said, “Why does our Prime Minister, who wears all sorts of outlandish headgear wherever he goes around the country, refuse to wear a Muslim skullcap? In his address, the Congress leader said PM Modi was seen in hilarious Naga headdress, feathers, and various kinds of extraordinary outfits then why does he refuse to wear the green?”
Kochi, August 6: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has once again stirred a fresh controversy by calling Naga Tribal headgear as 'outlandish' and questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi as to why he refuses to wear Muslim skull caps. During his address at a seminar in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday, Tharoor described North-East people and Naga Tribal headgears as funny looking outlandish and hilarious.
In his address, Tharoor said, “Why does our Prime Minister, who wears all sorts of outlandish headgear wherever he goes around the country, refuse to wear a Muslim skullcap? In his address, the Congress leader said PM Modi was seen in hilarious Naga headdress, feathers, and various kinds of extraordinary outfits then why does he refuse to wear the green?”
However, MoS Home Kiren Rijiju has demanded an apology from Congress MP Shashi Tharoor over his comments on PM Modi. “I demand an apology from the Congress Party for insulting the people of India's North East & Tribals. Shashi Tharoor described North-East people & Naga Tribal headgears as funny looking outlandish & hilarious”, Rijiju tweeted.
Also, Union minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore slammed Tharoor for his remarks. "Shashi Tharoor insults the proud cultural heritage of the people of North-East. This condescension & arrogance towards the people of India have become hallmarks of INC India", Rathore tweeted.
To this, Tharoor came up with a justification saying that he was referring to the ceremonial headdress offered to the visiting dignitaries and not daily wear. "Dear Rajyavardhan, you know better: I was obviously referring to the ceremonial headdress offered to the visiting dignitaries, not daily wear. But you're sidestepping the point", Tharoor tweeted.
Tharoor went on saying that the Prime Minister calls Rahul Gandhi a princeling, but never calls him a Rajkumar, he'd call him Shehzada because it's an Urdu/Persian word. Reports inform that the seminar was organised by the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Development Studies, run by the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee.
Earlier this week, a Delhi court allowed Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, accused in a case related to his wife Sunanda Pushkar’s death in a luxury hotel here, to travel abroad. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal allowed Tharoor’s application seeking permission for eight visits to five countries, including the US, Canada and Germany, till December.
