Congress candidate Hardev Singh Ladi has won Shahkot Assembly Bypoll in Punjab by defeating Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) Nominee Naib Singh Kohar by 38,802 Votes. It must be noted that in Punjab, the Congress came back to power in March last year after a gap of a decade. To recall, the bypolls in Shahkot bypoll was necessitated following the demise of Akali MLA Ajit Singh Kohar in February this year.

Chandigarh, May 31: The counting of votes for Shahkot Assembly Bypoll will be held on Thursday from 8 AM onwards. Voting in Shahkot was held on May 28 and over 76 per cent of 1.72 lakh voters exercised their franchise for the assembly seat. The Congress, SAD and AAP are locked in a triangular battle in Shahkot. In Punjab, the Congress came back to power in March last year after a gap of a decade. The main opposition Aam Aadmi Party, which faced humiliating defeat during Gurdaspur Lok Sabha bypoll and civic polls, is desperately looking for the victory. It must be noted that Shahkot bypoll was necessitated following the demise of Akali MLA Ajit Singh Kohar in February this year.
Kohar, a former minister, was elected five times from this seat. His son Naib Singh Kohar has been fielded by the Akali Dal this time. In February last year, Congress candidate Hardev Singh Ladi had lost to Kohar by nearly 5,000 votes in the assembly elections. The AAP has fielded Rattan Singh as its candidate.
Nearly 76.6 per cent polling has been witnessed on May 28. As many as 1,72,676 voters will decide the fate of 12 candidates who are in the fray. The Shahkot assembly constituency, considered an Akali bastion, had recorded 78.60 per cent polling during 2017 Assembly polls.
The ruling Congress has fielded Hardev Singh Laddi while Akali Dal has given ticket to Kohar's son Naib Singh Kohar. The Aam Aadmi Party has nominated Rattan Singh Kakkar Kalan for the Shahkot bypoll.

Last winner: Shiromani Akali Dal leader Ajit Singh Kohar had won the Shahkot assembly seat in Punjab in the 2017 Assembly Elections.
Reason for bypoll: By-polls were necessitated after the sitting MLA from the Shahkot seat, Ajit Singh Kohar of the Shiromani Akali Dal passed away in February 2018.
Candidates in fray: This year, a total of 12 candidates in the fray for the Shahkot Assembly seat in Punjab. The Congress party that is governing in state has fielded Hardev Singh Laddi while the Akali Dal, the party to which Late MLA Ajit Singh Kohar belonged, has fielded his son Naib Singh Kohar from the seat. The Aam Aadmi Party has given its ticket to Rattan Singh Kakkar.
