Shahkot, May 28: By-elections will be held in Punjab's Shahkot assembly seat on Monday, May 28. The three political parties namely the Congress, Aam Aadmi Party and the Akali Dal have left no stone unturned to ensure that they win the seat. The campaigning, which ended on Friday, saw a tedious and intense campaign by all the three parties. The assembly bypoll has gained importance considering the coming 2019 General Elections. Here are the last results, reason for bypoll, the candidates in fray, date of voting & results all simplified for you to understand and comprehend the by-elections.

Date of voting and results: As mentioned earlier, the Shahkot assembly seat in Punjab will go to polls on Monday, May 28, 2018. The counting of the votes will be done on Thursday, May 31 which will reveal the winner.

Last result: The Shahkot assembly seat was won by Akali Dal leader Ajit Singh Kohar in the 2017 Assembly Elections in Punjab. The MLA had won the seat for his party.

Reason for bypoll: The sitting MLA from the Shahkot seat, Ajit Singh Kohar of the Akali Party, passed away in February 2018. Thus, the seat fell vacant which necessitated a by-election.

Candidates in fray: The governing party in state, the Congress, has given the ticket to Hardev Singh Laddi. The Akali Dal, the party to which Late MLA Ajit Singh Kohar belonged, has fielded his son Naib Singh Kohar from the seat. The Aam Aadmi Party has pinned its hope on Rattan Singh Kakkar. Overall, there are 12 candidates in the fray.

The number of voters in the constituency are 1,72,676. They will get to decide the fate of the candidates as well as their constituency when they vote for the candidates today. The Election commission has deployed a total of 1,022 personnel of security forces including six companies of the Border Security Force in Shahkot. The Congress, AAP and Akali Dal will hope to win the seat and strengthen themselves to get the psychological advantage before the 2019 General Elections. The counting and result will be declared on Thursday, May 31.
