Kolkata, February 9: In what seems to be a case of politically motivated murder, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Satyajit Biswas was shot dead by unidentified persons on Saturday night, police said. Biswas was the legislator from Krishnaganj in Nadia district, and was shot from point-blank range in Phulbari, said reports.

The MLA had gone to the area to take part in a programme on the eve of Saraswati Puja.

A police official said that Biswas was shot dead by unknown miscreants and that investigations are on in the case.

The police bandobast in the area has been substantially increased following the killing of MLA Biswas.

The TMC cadre has directly blamed the BJP and said that the saffron party is responsible for the murder of the MLA. However, BJP has categorically denied the allegations. West Bengal BJP State President Dilip Ghosh has asked for a CBI probe after fingers were pointed at BJP for the incident.
