Guwahati, January 2: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday came in support of the Citizenship Amendment act (CAA). Sonowal said that the CAA would not affect the state’s indigenous population as the act has sufficient safeguards to protect the interest of the native population. Sonowal tweeted, “As a son of Assam, I will never settle foreigners in my state. This Sarbananda Sonowal will never allow this...” Speaking to news agency PTI, Sonowal said, “People should have no doubt or confusion in their mind regarding this law.We have many plans regarding protection of their interests and on this first day of the New Year,I want to assure all 'khilonjiya bhumiputras' (sons of the soil) that they are completely secure and there is no power that can endanger their existence?”

He also assured the people of Assam that no new people would come into the country “as a cut- off date of December 31, 2014, has been fixed as eligibility for the citizenship”. Sonowal asserted that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the centre is committed to implement the recommendations of the Committee on Assam Accords Clause Six for giving constitutional safeguards to the indigenous Assamese. He also accused the Congress and Left parties of creating a sense of terror and doubts in the minds of native Assamese by launching a misinformation campaign among the simple and innocent people, particularly in the tea garden areas, that illegal migrants would be settled on their ceiling surplus lands.
