Mumbai, October 10: Adv. Shahajibapu Rajaram Patil of Shiv Sena has won the Sangola Assembly constituency in Maharashtra by defeating the Peasants And Workers Party of India candidate Dr. Aniket Chandrakant Deshmukh. As per the election commission website, the schedule of polls in Maharashtra points that nomination papers for the candidature were filed till October 4. Following this, the nomination papers were scrutinised on October 5, and the aspiring candidate withdrew candidature till October 7. The polling took place on October 21 and Election Commission announced results on October 24. The new government in Maharashtra should be formed before November 9 because the current assembly expires on that day.

From the BJP-Shiv Sena camp, the candidate contesting from Sangola seat was Shiv Sena's Shahaji Patil. The Opposition had issued the ticket to NCP's Dipakarao Salunkhe from the constituency. In the last assembly polls held in 2014, Deshmukh Ganpatrao Annasaheb of Peasants and Workers Party of India (PWPI) had won the elections.
Ahead of the elections, pollsters had given the edge to the BJP in both Maharashtra and Haryana. In the latter, the party is predicting to win as much as 78 out of the 90 constituencies, as per one of the surveys. In Maharashtra, the BJP-Sena alliance was predicted to win upto 205-220 constituencies.
In the 2014 Maharashtra assembly elections, the BJP and the Shiv Sena had contested without a pre-poll alliance. The two parties ended up winning 123 and 63 seats, respectively. The Congress was restricted to 42 and the NCP managed to win 41 constituencies. Following the polls, the BJP and Sena came together to form the government.
