Hyderabad, May 23: Results for the Salem Lok Sabha Constituency in Tamil Nadu has been declared by the Election Commission of India (ECI). SR Parthiban of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has won the seat. The counting of votes for the Salem Lok Sabha Constituency began at 8 AM on Thursday, May 23. This is one of the 39 Parliamentary constituencies in Tamil Nadu which went to poll on April 18. This constituency is composed of six assembly segments including Salem North, Salem South, Salem West among others. This constituency has 1,171,839 number of electorates in totality, of these 596,384 are males and 575,455 are females as the Election commission of India data. The Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has fielded KRS Saravanan, the party's zonal secretary from Salem North, is contesting the parliamentary seat from the district. On March 26, the AIADMK candidate S R S Saravanan and 11 others filed nomination papers for Salem constituency. Reports inform that Makkal Neidhi Mayam candidate Prabhu Saravanan also filed his nomination papers on Monday. All the 39 seats in Tamil Nadu will go to poll on April 18 in the second phase. The counting of votes and results will be done on May 23. The last day of filing nomination for the polls in March 26 while the last day of withdrawal of candidature is March 29.
In the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, Pannerselvam V of the AIADMK had won the Salem seat by defeating DMK candidate Umarani. S. Pannerselvam had won the seat with a thumping majority of 556,546 votes.
