Ganganagar, December 11: Counting of votes in Sri Ganganagar district is currently underway, along with all other parts of Rajasthan which went to polls in the recently contested assembly elections 2018. The poll battle in these six constituencies – Sadulshahar, Ganganagar, Karanpur, Suratgarh, Raisinghnagar, Anupgarh – is primarily wedged between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the prime Opposition Congress. Stay tuned below for the live news and updates of election results and early trends emerging from the above-mentioned seats.
Sadulshahar: The BJP candidate from the seat is Gurveer Singh Brar, who is being challenged by Congress' Jagdish Chander. In the last elections, the latter had lost the seat by a margin of less than 5,000 votes. The incumbent BJP MLA Gurjant Singh, however, was denied a ticket from the constituency by the party. Check the live results here.
Ganganagar: From this assembly segment, the BJP has fielded Vinita Ahuja to take on Congress' candidate Ashok Chandak. The seat features a trilateral contest due to the strong presence of the National Unionist Zamindara Party (NUZP). The party had wrested the constituency in 2013. The incumbent MLA, Kamini Jindal, was fielded again in this round of the polls by the NUZP. Check live results here.
Karanpur: Here, the BJP candidate is the sitting MLA Surender Pal Singh. The prime challenger is Congress leader is Gurmeet Singh Kooner -- who had lost from the seat in 2013 by a margin of less than 4,000 votes. Check the live results and trends here.
Suratgarh: In this constituency, a trilateral contest is expected between the ruling BJP, the Congress and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). In 2013, BJP's Surendra Singh Bhadu had won the seat with a margin of over 25,000 votes. The nearest challenger was BSP's Dungar Ram Gedar -- who has been fielded again by the Mayawati-led party. The BJP, meanwhile, had decided to change its candidate, and issued the ticket to Rampratap Kahaniyan. The Congress nominee for the seat is Hanuman Meel. Check the results and trends here.
Raisinghnagar: The BJP candidate from this constituency is Balveer Singh Luthra, who had lost the contest here in 2013. The incumbent MLA Sona Devi, who had won the last polls on NUZP ticket, had jumped ship to the Congress ahead of this election. Check live results here.
Anupgarh (SC): Here, the BJP had replaced incumbent MLA Shimla Bawri with debutant Santosh Bawri -- a teacher-cum-political worker associated with the party. The Congress has fielded Kuldeep Indora. Analysts claim that NUZP candidate Shimla Devi Nayak could emerge as the dark horse -- as she had stood as the first runner-up in the last assembly elections. Check live results and trends here.
The counting of votes is expected to conclude in the next few hours, with the Election Commission of India scheduled to declare the final results by the end of the day. In case of a BJP victory, Vasundhara Raje would continue to remain the Chief Minister of Rajasthan. If the Congress succeeds in routing the saffron camp, the party is expected to take a cautious decision on choosing the CM between senior leaders Ashok Gehlot and Sachin Pilot.
