S Jaishankar, External Affairs Minister, Formally Joins BJP in Presence of Working President JP Nadda
External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on Monday formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in presence of working President Jagat Prakash Nadda, at Parliament House. A 1977-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer Dr S Jaishankar was appointed in the new EAM during the Narendra Modi Cabinet 2.0 on May 31.

According to the reports, the BJP is likely to field Jaishankar as its nominee for Rajya Sabha from Gujarat. Three seats in Rajya Sabha belonging to BJP got vacant after party president Amit Shah, Union ministers Smriti Irani and Ravi Shankar Prasad got elected to Lok Sabha. In Bihar, the NDA has announced Ram Vilas Paswan as its candidate.

Once nominated, both the ministers are likely to get elected to the Rajya Sabha as the National Democratic Alliance enjoys a clear majority in Bihar, while the BJP is in power in Gujarat. According to sources, the party was also considering to nominate Dr S Jaishankar from Tamil Nadu as six Upper House seats are getting vacant from the state in July.
