New Delhi, May 29: Congress President Rahul Gandhi's brother-in-law Robert Vadra, who is facing a money laundering case, on Wednesday submitted a medical certificate in a Delhi court seeking permission to travel abroad for treatment. Robert Vadra said he has a tumour in his large intestine and needs to travel to the UK and two other countries for diagnosis and further treatment.
Vadra, through his counsel KTS Tulsi, told the court that as per his medical report he has a small tumour in the large intestine and he wanted to take a second opinion in London. He also submitted a medical certificate from Delhi's Gangaram Hospital. During the hearing, advocate Tulsi said his client is cooperating with investigators and that he returned to India without any summons being issued to him. The Enforcement Directorate (ED), however, opposed Vadra's plea seeking permission to fly abroad, adding that he may flee. “His custodial interrogation is required and may flee. He is facing serious charges. His medical condition is merely a pretext where laundered money is parked. The medical condition appears to be is a routine medical check-up,” said Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for ED. Robert Vadra to Join Politics? After hearing arguments of both the sides, Special Judge Arvind Kumar said he would pass the order on June 3. Vadra, facing investigation in a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), was directed on April 1 not to leave the country without prior permission by a court which had granted him anticipatory bail while imposing several other conditions.
Vadra is facing allegations of money laundering in the purchase of a property in London at 12, Bryanston Square, worth 1.9 million pounds. Earlier today, the ED issued a summon to Vadra and asked him to appear before it on Thursday.
