Kolkata, January 2: The Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress on Thursday slammed the Central government for rejecting the West Bengal government's tableau proposal for Republic Day parade. The TMC said that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has insulted the people of the state for protesting the Citizenship Amendment Act. The West Bengal BJP, however, rejected saying that TMC should stop doing politics on every issue. Republic Day 2020: West Bengal's Tableau Not to Feature in Parade, Disapproved by Defence Ministry.
West Bengal Minister of State (MoS) for Parliamentary Affairs Tapas Roy told PTI, “Just because West Bengal has been opposing anti-people policies of the BJP government, a step-motherly treatment is being meted out to the state. As we have opposed anti-people laws like CAA, the Centre has rejected our tableau proposal.”
The West Bengal tableau was rejected by the Ministry of Defence on Wednesday. Before that, the Bengal government's proposal was turned down by an expert committee, which held two rounds of meeting.
"The tableau proposal of the West Bengal government was not taken forward for further consideration by the Expert Committee after deliberations in the second meeting. It is pertinent to mention here that the tableau of the Government of West Bengal was short-listed for participation in the Republic Day Parade 2019 as an outcome of the same process," the MoD said in a statement.
The Defence Ministry had received 32 tableau proposals from states and union territories and 24 from ministries and departments. Of these, expert committee shortlisted 22 proposals- 16 from states and Union Territories and six from ministries/departments.
