New Delhi, Mar 16: Congress MP Ripun Bora moved a resolution in the Rajya Sabha on Friday seeking an amendment to the national anthem. The lawmaker from Assam demanded the word 'Sindh' to be removed from the anthem, as it refers to a state which became part of Pakistan after the bifurcation of India in 1947.

In its place, the Congress veteran demanded, the word 'Uttar Parv' should be inserted which would refer to the states located in India's northeastern periphery.

A similar demand was raised by Shiv Sena MP Arvind Sawant in March 2016, who sought the removal of Sindh with a similar rhyming word, as the province is now part of Pakistan -- a nation which shares adverse relations with India.

The national anthem 'Jana Gana Mana' was composed by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore in 1911, when the Indian territory stretched from Balochistan in the west to Sylhet in the east.

The country, however, was divided after the colonial rule came to an end, with Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and parts of Punjab being ceded to West Pakistan; and Sylhet, Dhaka and other parts of Bengal being ceded to East Pakistan -- which later became Bangladesh.
