Bengaluru, December 19: Hours after detaining renowned historian Ramachandra Guha -- protesting against Citizenship Amendment Act -- by the Bengaluru Police, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on expressed his surprise. He was of the opinion that police should not take law into their hands and assured that he would immediately issue instructions.

Responding to the question asked by the media persons on Guha's detention in Bengaluru, Yediyurrappa said, as news agency PTI quoted, "Where? (Mr Guha arrested)... without reason police should not take law into their hands, I will immediately issue instructions." It is to be known that Guha and hundred of people were detained by the police in Bengaluru, when they were protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act. The Karnataka CM said, "Action should be taken against goonda elements and those indulging in disturbing law and order, and no action should be taken against common people. If any such thing has happened, action will be taken against officials."

Earlier a video was also released where a policeman is seen making a gesture as if to punch Mr Guha, when the later was speaking to the media. The historian was allegedly grabbed by the policeman by his arms. He told NDTV, "I have been detained by police for holding a poster of Gandhi and speaking about the constitution to the press."

Questioning the action of the police, Guha asked, "The police are working under directions from central government. We are protesting non-violently against a discriminatory act, in a disciplined way. Look here, everyone is protesting peacefully. Have you seen any violence?"

Meanwhile, Left leaders D Raja, Sitaram Yechury, Nilotpal Basu, Brinda Karat and others were detained at Mandi House here during an anti-Citizenship Act protest. While Ramachandra Guha and many others were detained at the Town Hall area in Bengaluru. Also, Congress, NCP and various other parties have formed a front called 'Hum Bharat Ke Log' and are organising a protest in Maharashtra. It is currently holding a protest at the August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai.
