New Delhi, July 31: Despite lacking a majority in the Upper House of the Parliament, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Union government succeeded in passing the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019 by 99 votes in favour and 84 against. Commenting on the absent leaders, senior BJP leader Ram Madhav took a jibe at the opposition stating that what happened in Parliament should happen for the welfare of the bills to be passed.
Mocking on the absentee parliamentarians during crucial voting for the Triple Talaq Bill, Madhav said, as quoted by the ANI, "Kal Parliament mein jis tarah kuch logon ne absent hokar us kanoon (Muslim Women Protection of Rights on Marriage Bill,2019)ko samarthan diya hum dhanyawad dete hain. (Yesterday the way few parliamentarians helped passing Muslim Women Protection of Rights on Marriage Bill, 2019, we thank them for that)." Adding more, he said, "Isi tarah jo acha kaam Modi ji karte hain uska samarthan karo khul kar nahi kar sakte to absent raho. (Like this way only one should support the good work of Modi ji (government), or they shall remain absent)."
Earlier on Wednesday, BJP government became successful in passing the pending and controversial Triple Talaq bill in Upper House of parliament. It is to be known that Congress had issued a whip for the fellow parliamentarians to be present during the vote, but four of them remained absent.
Among the other Rajya Sabha parliamentarians who remained absent include six from SP, four from BSP, two from NCP and one (KD Singh) from TMC. Also, six TRS MPs did not participate, while all 11 members of AIADMK and six JD (U) MPs spoke against the bill but walked out.
