New Delhi, August 6: The elections to the post of deputy chairperson of Rajya Sabha will be held on August 9, Thursday, said Vice President and Rajya Sabha chairperson M Venkaiah Naidu. The announcement by the vice- president came even as Opposition parties look to corner the government over the Assam NRC issue in the Rajya Sabha. According to news reports, the government will try to pass some key resolutions in the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

Earlier, the Opposition parties had met on July 16, to plan and develop a consensus for elections to the post of Rajya Sabha deputy chairperson, before the monsoon session of Parliament began. The monsoon session of Parliament began on 18 July.
Election to the post of deputy chairperson is crucial for the opposition parties, which is led by the Congress. The Opposition will look to retain the all important position. Meanwhile, the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which is in minority in the Rajya Sabha, is determined to get the seat through a candidate of its choice.
