New Delhi, August 1: The by-election to one Rajya Sabha seat of Uttar Pradesh and one Rajya Sabha seat of Rajasthan will be held on August 26, 2019, declared the Election Commission (EC). The Rajasthan seat fell vacant after Madanlal Saini's death on June 24, 2019. His term of office was supposed to be till April 3, 2024. In Uttar Pradesh, the member Neeraj Shekhar resigned on July 15, 2019 and hence the vacancy.

The last date for making nominations is August 14. Scrutiny of nominations will be done on August 16 and the last date for the withdrawal of nomination is August 19, 2019.

The Rajya Sabha party-wise strength currently stands as such: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has 78 members. The Indian National Congress 47 members. AIADMK- 11 seats, BJP - 7 seats, Independent and Others- 6 seats, Janata Dal (United) - 6 seats, TRS- 6 seats, RJD - 5 seats, CPI(M)- 5 seats, DMK- 5 seats, BSP- 4 seats, NCP- 4 seats, Nominated- 4 seats, Shiv Sena- 3 seats, SAD- 3 seats, AAP- 3 seats, TDP- 2 seats, YSRCP - 2 seats, JK (PDP)- 2 seats and other parties having a presence have one seat each.

The total strength of the Rajya Sabha is 240 members. The Rajya Sabha is the upper house of the Indian Parliament, with the Lok Sabha serving as the lower house. Lok Sabha members are entitled to a six-year term as opposed to the five year tenure of a Lok Sabha member.
