Rajya Sabha Adjourned Sine Die, Venkaiah Naidu Calls Monsoon Session Most Productive in Last 17 Years

New Delhi, August 7: Rajya Sabha, or the Upper House of Indian Parliament, adjourned sine die on Wednesday marking the end of a session which saw controversial bills scraping through despite the ruling BJP lagging behind the majority mark. The House would now convene in the Winter Session of Parliament, unless an urgent measure calls for the Parliament to be reconvened on short notice.

Before adjourning sine die, the lawmakers cutting across party lines observed a minute of silence to mourn the demise of former external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj.

"In her untimely demise, the nation has lost an able administrator, an effective parliamentarian and a true voice of people," Naidu said.

The Lok Sabha, meanwhile, adjourned sine die on Tuesday. On analysing the business undertaken by both Houses combined, research group PRS Legislative has found that the highest number of Bills were passed in the Monsoon Session of the Parliament in the last 10 years.

A total of 28 legislations were cleared during the Session in Lok Sabha. One of the high points of the session was the nod to the government's major restructuring plan for Jammu and Kashmir scrapping Article 370 and reorganising the state into two Union Territories.

The session also saw passing of crucial triple talaq Bill and amendments to the Right to Information legislations.

According to PRS Legislative data, there were seven cases when voting took place at some point during the discussion.

The session saw 36 per cent of questions being answered orally, the highest in 20 years. The question hour functioned 96 per cent time in the Lok Sabha and 65 per cent in the Rajya Sabha. The data shows, 94 percent first-time MPs and 96 per cent women MPs took part in the debates.
